About the Screening

What is Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screening is a preventive examination performed by our dental specialists to identify early signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth. This quick, painless examination can detect abnormalities before they develop into serious health issues.

India has one of the highest incidences of oral cancer globally, largely due to tobacco and betel nut use. Early detection through regular screening dramatically improves survival rates—when caught early, oral cancer has a survival rate of over 80%, compared to just 30% when detected at later stages.

At Dr. Dev's Dental Hospital, we incorporate oral cancer screening into routine dental check-ups and offer dedicated screening appointments. Our thorough examination includes visual inspection, palpation of tissues, and evaluation of any suspicious lesions or changes in your oral cavity.

Know Your Risk

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

Understanding risk factors helps in early prevention and timely screening.

Tobacco Use

Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or using smokeless tobacco significantly increases oral cancer risk. Tobacco is the leading cause in India.

Alcohol Consumption

Heavy alcohol use increases oral cancer risk. When combined with tobacco, the risk multiplies significantly, damaging oral tissues.

Other Risk Factors

HPV infection, excessive sun exposure, poor nutrition, weakened immunity, and family history of cancer also increase oral cancer risk.

Stay Alert

Warning Signs to Watch For

If you notice any of these symptoms persisting for more than two weeks, schedule a screening immediately.

Persistent Sores

Sores on the lip or inside the mouth that don't heal within two weeks.

White/Red Patches

Unusual white or red patches on gums, tongue, tonsils, or mouth lining.

Lumps or Thickening

Lumps, bumps, or thickened areas inside the mouth or on the lip or neck.

Difficulty Swallowing

Persistent difficulty or pain when swallowing, chewing, or moving jaw/tongue.

Numbness

Unexplained numbness, pain, or tenderness in mouth, face, or neck areas.

Voice Changes

Persistent hoarseness, voice changes, or feeling like something is caught in throat.

The Process

Oral Cancer Screening Steps

Our comprehensive screening process is quick, painless, and thorough to ensure no abnormality goes unnoticed.

1

Medical History Review

We discuss your medical history, lifestyle factors, tobacco and alcohol use, any symptoms you've noticed, and family history of cancer to assess your risk level.

2

Visual Examination

Using specialized lighting, we carefully examine your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, roof and floor of mouth, and throat for any unusual colors, sores, or lesions.

3

Physical Palpation

We gently feel the tissues in your mouth, under your jaw, and along your neck to check for lumps, masses, or areas of abnormal texture that may indicate problems.

4

Advanced Screening

If needed, we use additional diagnostic tools like specialized lights or dyes that help highlight abnormal cells that may not be visible to the naked eye.

5

Results & Discussion

We discuss our findings immediately. If everything is normal, we'll recommend a follow-up schedule. If any suspicious areas are found, we explain next steps.

6

Biopsy (If Needed)

If a suspicious area is identified, we may recommend a biopsy—a small tissue sample sent to a laboratory for definitive diagnosis. We'll refer you to specialists if necessary.
